Australian trains have a clean feel
Just like the north coast countryside
they travel through.
The pastoral scenes of horses and cows
The struggling, water-starved trees and brush
Clinging to every drop of Mercy
All the cows and calves bow their heads
As if in group prayer
Worshipping the very ground they walk on.
The moment in travel soon begins again
stopping to stare at nothing important
As if looking into a mirror
seeing yourself again happy
to be free of the constant worry
Eager for the next moment of wonder
Enchanted by children on the train
Enchanted by the train itself
Becoming one with the Great Iron Snake
Moving from place to place
Always searching never finding
The train is ultimately boring as it can be as it plows through the countryside
Stopping at every small town on this epic journey
I met two friendly children traveling by themselves on the way to meet their father. I gave the girl a handheld mirror. It was the very first time she saw herself. I protected them from strangers.
In return, the father invited me to spend the night at their palatial home. He took me to an Australian breakfast. This was way too much for a skinny guy like me.
He simply encouraged me to visit again, dropping me off at the train station. I continued ever northward.
